Sri Lanka’s government approves Chinese company proposal for Hybrid Wind and Solar Projects. Sinosar- Etechwin is the Chinese company to construct renewable power projects in Sri Lanka. The projects are worth US $ 12 million.
About the Projects
- The construction will be on the three islands of Sri Lanka: Delft, Analativu, and Nainativu. Hence, a total of 3 such projects will be deployed. Above all, one of them is near Tamil Nadu.
- Ceylon Electricity Board will jointly construct with the Chinese company. Ceylon Electricity Board works as a part of the Sri Lankan government for Supporting Electricity Supply Reliability Improvement Project.
- Moreover, fundings will be provided by the Asian Development Bank.
Definitely, the project seems well planned. However, it has raised questions and controversies, especially in India.
Why is it a concern for India?
Earlier, India and Japan jointly were supposed to construct Easter Container Terminal in Sri Lanka. After protests and criticism from trade unions, it was taken back by Sri Lanka’s government.
Following a disturbance in the terminal project, approval to the Chinese company raises questions and doubts, somewhere. Even when, border tensions between China and India remain unstable.
Furthermore, it is concerning for India due to security reasons. As China might be able to monitor closely.
Not only political but also geographical controversies are surrounding this project.
Other than this, one of the island’s water distribution or use is continuously debated. Majorly between Tamil Nadu and Jaffna fishers.
India- Sri Lanka Relations
India has always tried to maintain relationship with Sri Lanka. Undoubtedly, the ties are strong.
Several other projects are going on in Sri Lanka with the Indian government. Recently, Covid vaccines received by Sri Lanka for free were supplied by India. It was a gift to its neighboring nation, representing strong ties.
Also, Japan has always supported its fellow Asian country, Sri Lanka. Therefore, it might be upsetting to both the nations, Japan and India.
Still, it is important to understand Sri Lanka’s position.
July 18, the Cabinet Standing Committee of Sri Lanka accepted the projects. Importantly, the approval was before the cancellation of the India -Japan tripartite agreement. Although, the project was of extreme importance to India, Japan, and Sri Lanka. The solar project is equally important for Sri Lanka’s development.
It assures development with renewable power projects in Sri Lanka.
Not to forget, India even approved a Delhi-Meerut Railway RRTS Project to a Chinese company. The project is worth Rs 1,126 crores. Questioning why Sri Lanka chose a Chinese company cannot be stated as relevant completely. Still, certain aspects are disturbing to India and Japan.
India has even raised questions on the same. No clear reply was from Sri Lanka’s side. Though, sources’ statements assert clarify further. It was purely on the basis of bidding and the Chinese company’s proposal seemed most promising.
Subsequently, a Chinese company constructs renewable power projects in Sri Lanka.
While renewable energy projects are for development in Sri Lanka, it is alarming for India. Important is to see future developments in the Hybrid Wind and Solar Projects. Also, if the water dispute can hinder the development of one of the islands.
