The Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD has warned of an Arabian Sea Depression. This Depression is to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm. This cyclone has been called Tauktae. Myanmar has named the cyclone.
The storm may have a wind speed of 150-160 kms per hour. Even it can go upto 175 kms per hour. It is likely to hit Gujarat coast by the morning of May 18. we know that a tropical cyclone/ typhoon / hurricane is an intense circular storm. Also, a cyclone results in heavy rainfall. It can also cause damage to livelihood and property.
The other places Cyclone Tauktae might hit are Kerala, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Goa and Maharashtra.
Precautionary measures undertaken so far:
- Mumbai has suspended its vaccination program for the weekend. As was announced by its civic body on Friday.
- The NDRF(National Disaster Response Force) has increased the number of teams from 53 to 100 for relief and rescue measures. However, out of this 100, 42 teams are pre-deployed and 26 are on stand-by.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will supervise a meeting on Saturday to review the preparation to deal with the cyclone.
- Also, opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday, requested Congress workers to provide assistance to those in need.
The situation is alarming. Therefore, the need of the hour is not to panic. But, to stay alert and lookout for ways to help the situation.
