Dean Mervyn Jones (24th March 1961-24th September 2020) was an Australian cricket commenter, coach, and player. He was born in Coburg, Victoria in Australia. His tenure to play for Australia was about 10 years (1984-1994). He had a great achievement as Batsman of the Australian team throughout his lifespan. However, he took his last breath on 24th Sept. 2020 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Dean jones: Career in Cricket
Jones used to play One-day Internationals (ODI) and Test matches for Australia. He had an excellent record in test matches. Hence, he was considered best in batting (right-handed) and fielding skills (right-hand off-spin) in the ODI format. In the decade of 1980s and 1990s, the global cricket community honored him as the best ODI batsman in the world. His batsman skills included running between the wickets quickly and the willingness of taking the risks. In 2019, the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame invited him as a member. He played his last test match on 13th September 1992 with Sri Lanka. He played his last ODI on 6th April 1994 with South Africa.
Dean Jones on Retirement
He was retired in 1988. Then, he worked for cricket as a coach and commenter. He got the nickname ‘Professor Deano’ after giving a pitch report on a Television show. The global cricket community gave this name to him. 164 One-Dayers, racking up 6063 runs, seven centuries, and 46 fifties till his cricket career featured him.
However, he passed away at the age of 59 due to cardiac arrest. He collapsed in the hotel he was staying in, in Mumbai. His companion Brett Lee tried to resuscitate him until the ambulance arrived, but couldn’t save him. He was the part of the IPL commentary team at the time of his death. Jones’s wife, daughters, and his siblings were among a small group at the funeral ceremony. There was a limitation to ten people to be funeral due to Covid-19.
Lee called him an ‘absolute agent’ after a few hours of this tragedy. “I think the thing we want to say about Deano is he would have wanted us to be here tonight,” Lee said, his teammates send their condolences to his family too. Ex-New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris, told how Jones had his work out in the hotel by running down the corridors that morning. Hence, everyone in the cricket industry was in shock about the loss of such a great personality in the history of cricket.
Dean Jones was a great ambassador of the cricket involving himself with Cricket development across South Asia. He was passionate about discovering new talents all around and nurturing young Cricketers. That cricketer whose presence in the game always brought fun and enjoyment to millions of fans.
