Tokyo Olympics Day-5: Pooja, Deepika, Sindhu through to the next round

The Tokyo Olympics Day-5 ended with Japan at the top of the table. It has a total of 22 medals of which, 13 are gold. China moved a place on the table and currently occupies the second position. While the United States remains in the third position.

Though India did not see any additions in its medals, the hopes were raised by the Indian girls! The Indian Women’s hockey team lost to Great Britain early in the morning. The loss was by a score difference of 4-1. Right after this loss came the reigning Olympic Silver medalist PV Sindhu who won her match against the opponent from Hong Kong in straight games! The player showed her class and despite the strong opposition from the Hong Kong player won the game with ease.

Though the day started with disappointments coming in from archery, Deepika Kumari later came as a healer to the wounds! Deepika Kumari, the world no.1 archer defeated her opponents and qualified for the pre-quarterfinals. In the first game against the Bhutanese opponent, Deepika felt a little lost, still, she managed to win the match easily.

Also, in her next match against her opponent from the US, she lost the initial set by 25-26. However, she made the comeback and won the next sets. It was a 4-2 lead for Deepika and it felt she might be able to take the game away with ease. But she missed a shot by a little and ended up getting a 6 point, which gave an edge to the US archer. The score turned 4 all and the final set was the decider. Finally, in the last set, Deepika hit straight points and won her game to qualify for the pre-quarterfinals. Thus, the Indian Archery campaign still continues with responsibilities on Deepika’s shoulders!

The last and the most interesting highlight of the day was the bout of Pooja Rani. The 30-year-old boxer from India, with two Asian gold medals, contested in the 69-75 kg weight category! She was against a 10-year-old opponent from Algeria. The Algerian Boxer showed more offensive game. However, Pooja owing to her experience and skills won the game unanimously! The judges were impressed by Pooja’s direct hooks and pouches to the opponent’s face. She also showed an excellent defense. The Algerian Boxer who had shown good class in the Youth Olympics 2018 could not stand a chance against Pooja!

Thus the Tokyo Olympics Day-5 ended with some hopes grown!
