Rafael Nadal took home his 21st Grand Slam title on Sunday as he won his second Australian Open. He defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev (World number 2) after fighting back from two sets down in the beginning. Winning with the match numbers 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, the sixth seed made a historic comeback at the Rod Laver Arena.
In fact, Nadal called it “one of the most emotional matches” of his career. The match went on for a total of five hours and twenty-four minutes. His 21st major title put him ahead of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who have 20 Grand Slam titles each. He also became one of the few players to have won each of the four Grand Slam titles at least twice after winning his second Australian Open.
On the other hand, Ashleigh Barty also made history by becoming the 1st Australian woman to win the Australian Open singles title in 44 years. The world number 1 defeated Danielle Collins of USA to secure the title. The Australian won her third grand slam on Saturday with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-6(7-2).
Doubles Titles
Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic won their first Australian Open. This is their fourth Grand Slam title. The duo clinched the Women’s doubles title after defeating Anna Danilina and Beatriz Haddad Maiawith the match numbers 6-7(3-7), 6-4, 6-4.
The men’s doubles title was claimed by Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis. They won the final with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-4. Consequently, they became the first wildcards to win this award at the tournament in the Open Era. They beat Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the final. France’s Kristina Mladenovic & Croatia’s Ivan Dodig bagged the mixed doubles title on Friday. They won against their Australian opponents Jaimee Fourlis and Jason Kubler by 6-3, 6-4.
