Indian Americans love Kamala Harris. The daughter of an Indian Biologist who moved to the United States.
Harris, as a U.S. senator, has pushed immigration policies in favor of the Indian Community. Like lifting caps on H1-B visas and employment rights for their spouses, for instance. Then there’s the pride of Indian Americans to see their own rising in U.S Political System.
However, good for Indian Americans don’t mean good for The Indian Government. On the contrary, Biden’s Team’s priority is to draw a wedge between The USA & South Asia. Meanwhile, Washington is looking for allies in rivalry against China.
In addition to this, Harris has been diplomatically cautious in her few public comments about India’s government but has shown no love for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Moreover, she even criticized Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar while he was on an official visit to the United States.
Likewise, Harris’s own family connection to India may prove her attitude. Her mother belonging to Tamil Nadu in southern India, a state in which Modi’s BJP did not win a single seat in last year’s elections.
Secondly, Harris has been critical of the Indian government’s policies in Kashmir. Moreover suggested that she would put human rights at the center of her approach to India & the world. That sounds like political until you realize that in India, human rights often translates as anti-BJP.
In Conclusion, With Harris as Vice-President, Modi’s opponents in India may suddenly have much more leverage at their disposal.
