A dream does not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work. Well, this has been truly said. A dream long cherished, seems to be coming true! The Legends set by Vijendar Singh and MC MaryKom are being taken forward by the next generation of Indian Boxers. This was rightfully evident at the Asian Elite Boxing Championship!
A Total of 7 Indian Boxers qualified to the finals. 4 in the Women’s category and 3 in the Men’s category. However, Pooja Rani, the defending Champion(75 kg) was the only one from the women’s category to get the Gold.
Pooja showed an impressive performance and won the bout with ease against her opponent from Uzbekistan. She also received a cash prize of $10,000. She outsmarted the Uzbek Boxer and left her with no replies.
However, the other three women boxers including the six time World Champion MC Mary Kom could not turn the medals Golden. Though the performance they showed was amazing! The Tournament debutants, Lalbuatsaihi (64kg) and Anupama (81+kg) gave a tough competition to the opponents. Yet, they had to settle for Silver in the close and tight encounter!
MC MaryKom defying all odds at the Asian Elite Boxing Championship
The biggest highlight of the event remained the bout of Mary Kom. Boxing against an 11 year younger opponent, Nazym Kyzaibay, she showed her class! She used her experience to her full potential. Around 2:30 minutes, MaryKom turned aggressive from the defensive note that she kept during the entire First half.
The 38 year old legend from India dominated the first round! Nazym, the Kazak boxer came back with a jab on Mary’s face at the start of the second round. Nazym turned aggressive in the second round. Mary lost balance two times. Nazym dominated the second round and third round. Mary did succeed in landing a few punches on her opponent. But, the Kazak boxer used her Physique to her advantage beautifully. Thus, Mary lost a close bout by split decision of 3-2. However, the difference in points between the two boxers was just 3! Still, there are these legends for whom wins and losses are not the defining features! Mary surely is the epitome of an Empowered Woman!
Earlier, eight other Indian Boxers, namely, the Olympic-bound trio of Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), and Jasmine (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (64kg), Monika (48kg), Sweety (81kg) and Varinder Singh (60kg), succeeded in getting Bronze Medals.
In the Men’s Final played on 31st May 2021, Amit Panghal, in a close bout lost to his opponent. Thus, he got the Silver Medal. A similar anecdote repeated with Shiva Thapa in the 62 kg weight category. He too had to settle for Silver!
