KOO app ~A desi choice for India to counter Twitter

Indian apps are emerging as an alternative for banned Chinese apps and other apps in India. Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidawatka developed the koo app in November 2019. It was launched to public in March 2020.Since then there is over 3million downloads. It attained it’s peak in the past one week after the clash between Indian government and Twitter . Some ministers of India started  using koo app. They also encouraged people to use KOO app as an alternative to twitter.

There is a difference in the logo is that, KOO has a yellow bird but twitter has a bluebird.

What’s the news about KOO app and twitter

Koo app is now among the top free apps available on play store both in Apple and Android platforms.

Controversy on Chinese investor link

Bombinate Technology is the parent company for both KOO and Vocal. Vocal is similar to that of Quora platform.

Shunwai capital as a venture capitalist invested in Vocal. Now these shares are being bought by the Indian entrepreneurs including

  • Ashish Hemrajani of BookMyShow
  • Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha
  • Sujeet Kumar of Udaan
  • Parent investors of KOO are 3one4 Capital, Accel Partners, Blume Ventures

Controversy on data security

As there is a large increase in number of users there arising a question on data security. It was said that the profile information including date of birth, gender, marital status were available openly on internet.

Co founder and CEO of KOO app Mr. Aprameya Radhakrishna denied that the information is made public with the permission of the user. Hence it cannot be termed as data security breach.

Another issue on the email id of the users were public. That was also fixed. The email option is used by only 4% of the users in KOO app

Twitter vs Indian government

The Indian government is not satisfied with twitters activities since Republic Day incident. Soon after the farmers protest on Republic Day, internet was cut in Delhi . And  many international celebrities came in support of farmers in twitter. Therefore the Indian government asked twitter to remove posts related to farmers issue and block accounts spreading new on it. But twitter denied this request and replied it would be against freedom of expression.

This created friction on both sides and the Indian government wanted to replace twitter in India. Thus came the KOO app.

The KOO app is an Indian version of Twitter. KOO app is user friendly. Hence it gained attention. People appreciate this new platform unanimously. Many central and state ministers including Mr. Ravi Shankar, Mr. Piyush Goyal, etc is now on the KOO app.

This has given a spotlight to the app. Also, many Indians are rapidly downloading the app from the play store.

How to install KOO

KOO app is available on Android and iOS platforms. It is very easy to install and requires less space in the phone. Therefore, the users can directly go to the play store on their platform and download the KOO application.

How to use KOO

KOO is a microblogging platform. Firstly, just enter your phone number. Immediately after the verification, the app is ready to use. Here we can post photos, videos, audios, etc. However, The text posting is restricted to 400 characters. Above all, It supports most of the Indian languages.

Moreover, We can use #( hash ) to write about something or @symbol to tag someone. Similarly, There is re-Koo in the KOO app (like a retweet on Twitter). Unlike Twitter, the KOO app has chatting options.

Banned apps in India

India permanently blocked 59 Chinese apps in June 2020. It was under 69A of the information technology act and IT rules 2009. India banned Up to 118 apps in September and  43 more apps in the November month of the same year.

It is very much welcoming that Indian apps are replacing most of the apps outside India. This will increase the sustainable development of our country in all aspects. For instance, in the information technology sector. We must try to incorporate this concept of making in India in all other sectors.
