Murud-Janjira Fort is located off the coast of Murud Village near the Arabian sea. It is one of the strongest and beautiful marine forts in India.
55 km from the popular town of Alibaug, this historic fort is located. The Arabian sea has covered mighty fort from all four sides. The fort symbolizes the brave Marathas. The height of the fort is 50 feet.
A minister under the Sultan of Ahmednagar, Malik emperor built the fort. It was built around the 17th century and was ruled by Sultans for years. Some parts of the fort and its towers were destroyed as some fights were held in and out of the fort. The total domination was of the Siddhis for over 100 years, from the beginning of the 18th century.
It was easy to spot enemies because of its structure. Siddhis defeated the Portuguese, Britishers, and the Marathas at the fort.
Siddhis and Peshwa Bajirao of Maratha’s battle in 1736. Peshwa Bajirao’s chief commander killed around 1500 Siddhis.
Structure of Murud-Janjira fort
Though most of the fort was ruined but Murud-Janjira was more than a fort. There were 572 cannons out of which only 3 left. Those 572 canons launch canon bells on the enemy army. The 3 canons are Landa Kasam, Kalal Bangadi, and Chavri and are at the top.
The cannonballs are a mixture of metals. The cannonballs could go as far as 12 Kms. There are two main entrances of the fort, the first is the main and the second is towards the sea.
The beachside entrance gate is the entry gate for the visitors. Animal design patterns like elephants, tigers, and lions are made up on the gate. The main gate is the entrance of Durbar Hall, which is the place where meetings and several religious festivals celebrations take place.
‘Darya Darwaza‘ is the second gate that opens towards the sea. This gate was the escape gate in battles.
