Release Leichombam Erendro before 5 pm today: Supreme Court

Leichombam Erendro is a Manipur-based political activist. Today, the officials released him from jail at 04:45 PM. This was mere 15 minutes before the deadline of 5 PM issued by the Supreme Court of India. Since the bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud said that keeping Leichombam in custody is a violation of fundamental rights.

Leichombam’s father had filed a plea on a personal bond of Rs.1000. This was because Leichombam Erendro was arrested for sedition on May 13th this year. As per the officials, he was arrested under the National Securities Act. This was for commenting “Cow dung and cow urine don’t work the cure is a science & common sense. Professor Ji RIP. ” under the Facebook post of then BJP president Saikhom Tikendra Singh’s death.

Usham Deben Singh, the vice president of BJP Manipur filed the complaint against Erendro.

In this, he alleged that Erendro has deliberately insulted religious fillings and sentiments” of BJP workers and family members of the deceased as reported by Indian Express.

Indian Express: SC orders release of Manipur activist Erendro Leichombam detained under NSA by 5 pm

However, it is not the first time he has been arrested for sedition. Last year he posted a photo of Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leishemba with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The photo, captioned “minai macha”, showed Manipur’s titular king bowing down to Mr. Shah. In the local language, the caption translates “son of a servent”

No doubt, any such comments posted deliberately is surely an insult for the deceased and demeaning for the family members. However, if that is not the case, then the Supreme Court’s step is really an appreciable move.
