Yet another incident of protests was reported. Nowadays, protests have become very casual in every country. Nonetheless, here I am talking about the protests going on in the Belarusian capital of Minsk. On Sunday, bundles of people came out on streets to protest against the country’s authoritarian leader. In the disputed election he won his sixth term in office.
The people divided themselves into different rallies. As per estimation thousands of people joined these rallies. This indeed is a new trick to do protests to avoid security forces to stop them.
Reason for the protests
The protesters took red and white flags on the streets which are a symbol of protest. They demand the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko. The crowd shouted, “Lukashenko, go away!”. In different places, protestors wore the costume of Santa Clause. According to the Viasna humans rights center, the number of detained people is more than 200.
In Belarus, mass protests have become a daily thing since the president won the election. Moreover, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and her supporters refused to recognize the results of the election. In addition to that, she claimed that the vote was penetrated with fraud.
To stop the rallies and protests police are trying their every possible power. Thus, the police used stun grenades, tear gas, and truncheons to stop the protests. However, this was the first Sunday when the protests went to subway stations. In addition to this, a couple of videos were posted on social media in which police were chasing and detaining protesters.
Turavets said, “Tens of thousands of Belarusians have already gone through detentions, torture and paid a high price for freedom,”.
So far, 30,000 people were detained since August and several were beaten brutally. Lastly, we hope that the protest may end soon.
