PM Modi’s address at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
Heads of hundreds of Nations gathered in New York City to attend the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The high-level delegate gathering started on 21st September and concluded on 27th September 2021.
Last year the event was almost held virtually because of the global pandemic. But this year, many of the world leaders are delivering the addresses in person. Also, this is the U.S President Joe Biden’s first address to the 193-member world body since his appointment as the President.
Some of the topics highlighted in the UN General Assembly are Vaccination for COVID-19, Climate Change, and the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
On Saturday evening, PM Modi addressed the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations Assembly in New York City:
PM Modi paid condolences to the families who lost their near and dear ones in the global pandemic. And called for the UN to stay relevant at such unprecedented times.
Although PM Modi did not mention the name of Pakistan, he clearly stated that those countries using terrorism as a political tool must understand that it is equally harmful to them.
Highlights:
1. PM Modi said that India is an example of a vibrant democracy.
And he stated his example as a reference. He said the strength of India’s democracy lies in the fact that a little boy who used to help his father at a tea stall in India is addressing the UNGA for the fourth time in a row as the Prime Minister of the Largest Democracy.
Not only that little boy became the CM of a state but also the Prime Minister of India for the second time.
2. Next, PM Modi focused on technology advancements in India
India is making advancements on the path of development. And, the Prime Minister also said that India as a country believes in a development process that is all-pervasive, universal, and nurtures every one of us.
PM Modi, while addressing the COVID-19 situation, spoke of the measures taken. He also stated that India developed the world’s first DNA vaccine for the global pandemic, COVID-19. The vaccine can be administered to everyone who is above the age of 12. Furthermore, PM Modi mentioned that the Indian scientists are also developing a nasal vaccine for the COVID-19 situation.
3. Then PM Modi shifted his focus to rising threats of terrorism
After highlighting the above points, PM turned his attention to terrorism and extremism, a global challenge threatening the entire world. PM Modi is direct words stated that regressive thinking and extremism are serious concerns threatening the world.
Also, PM Modi stressed the fact that the Afghan territory does not become a medium to spread terrorism.
4. After terrorism, PM Modi spoke clearly about China’s intentions over South-China Sea
Targeting China, PM Modi clearly stated that ocean resources are to be used for the welfare of mankind and not to be abused. He emphasized that the ocean resources need to be protected. Also, ocean routes are a lifeline to international trade, so maritime security is equally important. Furthermore, PM Modi stated that oceans need to be protected from the race of expansion and exclusion. According to him, the world should come together and raise its voice against such moves. PM Modi’s comments targeted China as they were making efforts for expansion in the South-China Sea. Notably, that has already led to many regional disputes.
5. At the end, PM Modi had some suggestions for the UN
PM Modi advised the United Nations. Why? Because United Nations has been under criticism for not adapting to changing times. So, PM Modi quoted famous Indian philosopher Chanakya’s saying, “When the right work is not done at the right time, time itself destroys the success of that work.” In the context of the United Nations, Former U.S President Donald Trump has said that the UN is an organization where people just talk and have a good time. Thus, PM Modi stated that if the UN is to be relevant, it must increase its effectiveness and reliability.
What can be summed up?
Every year there is a theme for the General Debate of the United Nations. The theme for this year was building resilience through hope to recover from the global pandemic, reconstruct global sustainability, respond to the needs of the planet and respect the rights of the people. Also, one more aspect was to revitalize the United Nations.
The high-level diplomatic gathering was hybrid. Many leaders from across the globe gathered in New York City for the event.
PM Modi arrived in Washington for a three-day tour to the U.S. It was his first travel since the outbreak of the global pandemic.
The PM concluded his tour with the UNGA address, which was on Saturday. Before the address, PM Modi attended bilateral meetings with U.S President Joe Biden on Saturday Morning. And, with Kamala Harris, the Vice-President of the U.S on Friday.
Besides this, PM Modi also met his Australian and Japanese counterparts. Moreover, PM Modi attended the first QUAD Leader’s Summit, in-person after the outbreak of COVID-19.
Also, PM Modi met the CEOs of five top American companies during his tour.
After the 76th address of the UNGA, he wrapped up his visit to the U.S on Saturday evening.
