SC appoints a three-member committee to investigate the Pegasus issue

The Apex Court appointed an independent committee of three members to look into the Pegasus spyware case.

An incident like the Pegasus spyware case violates the privacy of individuals and institutions. It is a threat to the internal security of the nation. So, a free, fair, and independent judiciary is the need of the hour. Why? So that the court can prevent any such incidents in the future.

Thus, the Supreme Court announced a three-member bench, including Cheif Justice N V Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli. Former Supreme Court judge RV Raveendran is going to head the three-member committee.

Furthermore, the Centre cited an example of national security and refused to file a detailed affidavit.

The Supreme Court ordered the committee to draft a detailed report on the matter. Also, the next hearing is scheduled 8 weeks from the given date.

In an opening statement, the Apex Court acknowledges the fact that we live in the world of technology. So, technology plays a vital role in society. But, what is more, important is to safeguard the right to privacy.

The Supreme Court also said that the allegations against the Pegasus spyware case are chilling in nature and, the court must find out. Thus, stating that the right to privacy of every citizen of India needs to be protected.

The Supreme Court stated, as there is no specific denial by the Centre. Thus, the court has no other option but to accept the submission of the petitioner’s prima facia. As a result, the Supreme Court an expert’s committee.

As the Pegasus spyware scandal is a violation of the rights of privacy. Therefore, it must be examined by the court of law.

The Supreme Court emphasized that this is a serious violation involving foreign agencies.

The court said that the Centre’s response was vague, which compelled them to form the committee and call for an investigation.

Apart from the three members, other members will be Alok Joshi and Sandeep Oberoi.

Furthermore, the Court also said that initially there were not satisfied with the petitions filed based on newspaper reports. But, on review petitions filed by real victims, the court called for action.

SC gave a lot of opportunities to the center, but the center didn’t cooperate.
