Tokyo Olympics Day-7: Lovlina confirms a medal; Sindhu through to Semis

The Tokyo Olympics Day-7 came with many good surprises for India. Though there were some disappointments altogether the ay was good enough for India. While Lovlina Borgohain assured India with the second medal, PV Sindhu beat A. Yamaguchi to qualify for the semis.

The Tokyo Olympics Day-7 ended with China clinching the top of the medal tally. A total of 40 medals including 19 golds are in China’s account. The Dragon is closely followed by Japan in the second spot with a total of 28 medals, including 17 golds. The United States of America is in the third spot. China claimed the first spot as the events like Badminton and table tennis saw ultimate Chinese domination with both of the gold medal contenders being Chinese in some games.

India At The Tokyo Olympics Day-7

The day started with Deepika Kumari winning her pre-quarterfinal match. As the day continued, Shooters were in Action. With a #5 position, Manu Bhaker had shown good form in the precision round yesterday. Though both Rahi Sarnobat and Manu Bhaker failed to qualify for the finals today. Later, Simranjeet Kaur came for her bout in the women’s lightweight category. She lost to her Thai opponent by a unanimous decision! The golfers too couldn’t step forward. In Individual Equestrian Eventing, Fouaad Mirza stood #7 in the second session. The third session is scheduled for tomorrow.

The next came the bout of India’s future Boxing sensation Lovlina Borgohain. With an impressive height of 5ft 10in, the girl was in the red corner. Against a strong opponent from Chinese Taipei, Lovlina showed an immense performance. She dominated right from the start and won the first bout by 3-2. Later, in the second round, her opponent tried coming back but lost her points in defense. Lovlina won the second round unanimously. Thereby, she went on to win the bout 4-1! Thus, Lovlina Borgohain became the second Indian Women Boxer after MC Mary Kom to win an Olympic Medal. She will be facing the world no.1 boxer in her category in the semi-final. Her opponent from Turkey is b. Surmeneli, who showed her class and won her bout unanimously. Though she’s world no.1, Lovlina promised to give her all with the mindset that she has nothing to lose. 

Tokyo Olympic Day-7 saw the Indian Hockey Teams in Action. The Women’s team up against Ireland won the match by 1-0. While the men’s Team against Japan won by a score difference of 5-3. Today was the end of the group stage matches. Hopefully, the Team will do better in the knockout stages as well!

PV Sindhu does it again!

The Indian Badminton Superstar and currently the reigning world champion PV Sindhu qualified for the semi-final today! She defeated Akane Yamaguchi in a close match, though the scoreline says otherwise! Though Sindhu won the game in straight sets by 21-13 and 22-20, still, it was a tough match. Yamaguchi tried her level best but eventually lost to the strengths and skills of Sindhu! Now, Sindhu will face the World No.1 Tai Tzu Ying from Chinese Tapei in the semi-finals! 

An upset came from archery where Deepika Kumari lost to An San from the Republic of Korea. She lost in straight sets by a 6-0 scoreline. Later, An San went on to become the first archer to get triple gold namely in the Mixed team event, Women’s team event, and individual event. Now, Atanu Das is the only archer remaining at the Toko Olympics.

Series Of Upsets From Track And Field

Though Avinash Sable broke his own national record in his heat, he could not make it to the final round of the 3000m Men’s steeplechase event. Other upsets from the track and field events included Dutee Chand, MP Jabir, and the 4 into 400 m relay team. They could not finish into the final rounds and were removed in the initial rounds themselves.

While the Indians flourished a little, a couple of disappointments did occur. The Tennis legend Novak Djokovic lost his semi-finals, both in the singles as well as the mixed doubles category. Another upset came when the US team was disqualified from the 4 into 400 m mixed relay team event They were charged with some error while exchanging the baton!

In the mixed doubles badminton event, the two contending Chinese teams had a really tough match! Interestingly, the second-seeded juniors defeated their senior athletes to win the gold medal! 

As the Tokyo Olympics Day-8 unfolds there will be more surprises in its store. The emotions of the athletes are actually a sight to behold! All we can do is watch and enjoy the amazing flavors of sports!
