India On Tokyo Olympics Day-9
India’s day started with some bad news coming from Golf. Though the golfers played well, they were left far behind! Also, in Equestrian, Fouaad Mieza showed some good moves but ultimately finished 22nd. He had been in the top 10 ranks up until yesterday!
Another bad news came from the Men’s Boxing 91+ kg weight category where Satish Kumar contested. He was up against the world no.1 Bakhodir Jalolov from Uzbekistan. Though the scorecard says otherwise, Satish gave a hard time to Jalolov. The bout went to the Uzbek Boxer unanimously but Satish’s good punches and jabs would surely be remembered by him. The Uzbek Boxer also showed a great sportsman spirit as he stood holding the ropes for Satish as he made his way out! Satish was injured in the previous bout and was playing with his injury. His wound started bleeding mid-way in the bout but the man showed the spirit of the Indian Army and fought till the end! Interestingly, Satish started boxing after joining the army and did not even know of a sport like boxing. Still, with this loss, he exited Tokyo Olympics!
PV Sindhu Creates History
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu went on to win the Bronze Medal match after defeating China’s He Bingjjao in straight games. PV Sindhu, a strong contender for the gold medal had lost his semi-final match to Tai Tzu Ying. Taking lessons from her yesterday’s loss she played a really fine game today!
Starting off in the leading foot she dominated the Chinese throughout the game. Though He Bingjjao tried making comebacks she was unsuccessful and lost the match 21-13, 21-15. Thus PV Sindhu became the second Indian athlete after Sushil Kumar, and the first Indian woman to get two Olympic Medals.
After her victory, the entire country poured in wishes for the champion!
Though the bronze medal match turned one-sided, the intensity of the gold medal match was great. Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei and Chen Yufei of China were up against each other for their first Olympic medal. The nail-biting match is very well reflected in the scoreline of 21-18, 19-21, and 21-18. The match went in favor of Chen Yufei. Thus, the favorite of the match Tai Tzu Ying had to settle for silver. Interestingly, before this match, Tai had a lead in head-on-head matches by 15-3 against Chen.
Indian Men’s Hockey Team Through To Semis, First Time After 1972
The Indian Men’s Hockey Team, currently world no.3 beat Great Britain in the quarter-final match. Thus, they entered the Semi-final of the Olympics for the first time in 41 years. The match saw quick goals from India’s side in the start itself. However, the Great Britain team tried to make a comeback. But, a wonderful goal from Hardik Singh shattered the British hopes and the scoreline read 3-1 when the final whistle blew!
Now, they will play their Semi-final against the world no.1 Belgium. The women too have entered the knockout stages and will play their quarter-final against Australia tomorrow!
Much action still awaits in the Olympics. The wrestling bouts have started as well, and without a doubt, India has its hopes high for the wrestlers! It will be good to anticipate at least a couple of medals more! Not to forget that the consecutive no. of medals from India’s women became five with Sindhu’s medal! This includes the two medals from Rio as well! India has seen its empowered women shine bright on the global stage! Hope the shine continues!
