The Tokyo Olympics Day-11 did not turn out to be too fruitful for India. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team lost the semi-final to Belgium in a close contest. Now, they will play Germany for the Bronze Medal Match.
The Tokyo Olympics Day-11 saw China still clinging to the top of the medal tally. The Chinese domination was seen in the gymnastics arena as well. Here, in the parallel bars event, both the gold and the silver medal were taken by the Chinese women. Simone Biles, one of the most decorated gymnasts from the United States won the bronze in the category. Currently, China tops the table with a total of 69 medals. Of these 32 are gold. The United States of America is stuck to the second position with a total of 73 medals. Of these 24 are gold. The host Japan is in third place.
India’s Performance on Tokyo Olympics Day-11
India’s day started with Annu Rani contesting in the Javelin Throw. She could not qualify for the final round. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team played their semi-final against Belgium. With just one rank difference between the two teams, it was a tough and close contest.
The match started with the Indian Men penetrating the opponent’s D in the first 30 seconds. However, Belgium managed to score a goal right in the first minute of the game! Indian Men came back when they scored two consecutive goals and ended the first quarter with a 2-1 lead. In the second quarter, India’s defense played an excellent game. Still, Belgium managed to get a goal out of a penalty corner. The Half time came with a score of 2-2. No goals were scored in the third quarter and both the teams put in their all.
Things turned around for India in the last moments of the fourth quarter where Belgium managed to get a lot of Penalty corners and a penalty stroke ultimately. Alexander Hendrickx made a big difference and went on to get a hat-trick. Though the score difference, if seen any moment in the future might seem one-sided, the match was surely not. Both the teams ground themselves throughout but ultimately India lost to the World Champions.
The wrestling match of the freestyle women’s 62 kg weight was an interesting one. India’s 19 yr old Sonam was contesting, and honestly, she is a good find of the Tokyo Olympics. The girl had her Mongolian opponent by the throat and led the match till the last 35 seconds of the match. However, despite Sonam’s excellent defense, the much experienced Mongolian showed her skills and used a two-pointer move. This resulted in Sonam’s loss. Still, the 19-year-old girl showed great efforts and undoubtedly she is a future champion, worth a behold.
Later, in the men’s shot-put category India’s Tajinder Pal Singh Toor could also not qualify for the finals and finished 13th.
Thus, though it was not a great day on papers for India, it was bewitching to watch India’s lads play like champions! Day-12 is yet to see Neeraj Chopra in action. Also, many wrestlers will also show their moves on the mat, and India’s Lovlina Borgohain will be playing the semi-final against the Turkish world champion. Indian Women’s Hockey team will also be in action.
