India’s highest altitude Institute located in Ladakh gets LiFi technology

LiFi- an innovative technology that uses light to set up internet connectivity has been introduced in the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). It is an innovative initiative to provide faster, safer, and cheaper internet.

Nav Wireless Technologies Pvt Ltd based in Ahmedabad gets the credit for setting up Light Fidelity (LiFi) Technology at the educational facility. Sonam Wangchuk, the founder and president of SECMOL, expressed his ambition to connect the entire Ladakh with LiFi technology by teaming up with the company. He also believes that this technology can bring revolutionary changes in the education sector.

Being an extraordinary advancement in wireless technology, LiFi can change the way we connect to the internet.

How does LiFi work?

LiFi network uses the modulation of light intensity from a strong lighting source like LED or infrared light to transmit data. It only demands a light source with a chip to transmit internet signals via light waves. Modulated light frequencies from the light source transmit data and fro LiFi enabled devices. Light signals then convert electronic data stream to provide faster internet

In simple words, this amazing technology allows you to connect to the internet using light from LED bulbs, lamps, streetlights, and more. LiFi doesn’t require a router. All you have to do is point your smartphone towards the source of light to surf the internet.

Is it even better than WiFi?

A definite yes! While both are forms of wireless communication technology, the major difference between them is that WiFi uses radiofrequency waves whereas LiFi transfers data using light beam spectrum.

It has better bandwidth than WiFi, 3G, and 4G. WiFi has a limited capacity. It gets saturated with the increase in internet users results in reduced speed and interrupted connection. Whereas In terms of speed LiFi is 1,000 times faster than WiFi. It can reach up to 224 Gbps making it faster than the latter.

In addition, It offers more security as light cannot penetrate through walls thus limiting its range. It is also easily accessible and cheaper, its only requirement is cost-saving LED lighting systems.

How can LiFi benefit the institute?

It entails many benefits for the Institute. Ladakh is a high-altitude desert. It is challenging terrain for setting up Fiber Optic Cables or radio spectra. For this reason, the LiFi network will ensure smooth internet connectivity through the existing electric power lines. It will facilitate the conduct of online lectures by the faculties. At the same time, students can access essential resources, stream educational videos, download classes using ultra-fast data connections.

The example of LiFi in SECMOL, Ladakh is one of a kind. It opens up the immense scope of discussion and development of smart solutions using innovative technology in India. It is a gigantic leap towards enriching sustainable and environment-friendly technology.
