India’s Performance On Tokyo Olympics Day-13
Hockey Back To Glory Days
The highly anticipated day for India started with the Indian Men’s hockey match! The Men in blue were up against the world no. 4 German opposition. The intensity of the match was more than expected. Initially, the game started with the German’s domination. They had the ball possession and wanted to control the game. Things became hard for India after Germany scored a goal and put India on a 1-0 trail. However, the guys in blue determined to return from Tokyo with a medal left no stones unturned!
They were soon back in the game when Simranjeet scored a goal to level the score. The Germans, however, got the Indians by the neck and scored 2 goals in the second quarter. Down by 3-1, the Indians tried coming back. They managed to score a goal and went in the half time with 3-2. The third quarter was the most fruitful for India. They managed to score two goals and took the lead from the Germans by 4-3. The Germans made the best efforts possible to get the score leveled. Still, the Indians were managing to keep them in check.
Things got much better when India got one more goal in the final quarter. However, Germany also managed to get a goal in the last few minutes and scored a goal. Things tensed up when Germany went all out and called back their goalkeeper. The last moment too was a nail-biter as the Germans managed to get a penalty corner with just around 10 seconds left. But, Sreejesh, the wall succeeded in saving the goal! And with that India created history by getting an Olympic medal after 41 long years!
The Gold medal match in this category was won by Belgium who had defeated India in the semi-final. Australia settled with the Silver medal!
The Pehelwans Bringing Pride
Indian wrestling contingent with a lot of hopes tied showed some excellent performances today! The day started with the 19-year old Anshu Malik up against the Silver medalist from Rio. Anshu was in control for most parts of the game, but the opponent wrestler owing to her immense experience turned the tables in the last 30 seconds and won the match! Still, it was beautiful to see Anshu take ahead her family legacy of wrestling!
Next came the no. 1 seeded Vinesh Phogat. A well-deserved medalist, Vinesh defeated her opponent with ease and technical superiority in the first round and qualified for the Quarter-finals. However, she lost the quarter-final to Vanesa of Belarus. Vanesa in turn lost her Semi-final bout. Hence, Vinesh will not be even contesting for the bronze! This apparently was a big heartbreak for all the wrestling fans of India!
Ravi Dahiya who had qualified for the final yesterday wrestled against the world champion in his category. He showed excellent moves. Still, he lost by 7-4. The match was fierce and had everyone’s nerves wrecking!
Deepak Poonia playing for the bronze medal also wrestles like a champion. Though he lost the match, he did win the hearts of lots of people!
Other Performances
While the wrestlers were having their matches, India was also contesting in other events. For instance, in the 20km walk-race, India had three players contesting. None of them could finish in the top ten. India’s Sandeep Kumar had remained in the top two for around 10 kilometers, but his opponents had more reserved energy stored. Hence, he could not come in the leading herd!
Aditi Ashok, the surprising performer contesting in the Women’s golf individual remains at no.2 after the end of two rounds! She surely has increased the hopes of Indians. However, there are still 2 more rounds to be held.
India’s medal hope and flag bearer for the ending ceremony is yet to contest tomorrow. Bajrang Poonia will have his matches tomorrow! India also hopes the Women’s Hockey Team too returns with the title of Olympic medalist! It will be interesting to see how many medals could come to the Indian account this time!
