Greece: Major Fires Raging Close To Ancient Olympic Site
On Thursday in Greece major forest fires are raging. The wildfires are near Olympia and Evia. Greece is suffering from a record-breaking heatwave.
In Greece, the Greek firefighters are battling through extreme Wildfire. Also, there are over 50 trucks 6 helicopters also water-bombing aircraft. 170 firefighters a trying to control the fire near the ancient archaeological site Olympia. The place of origin of the Olympic games.
Around 20 houses have been already damage. The fire is now moving towards Lalas. Lalas is a mountainous region near North West of Olympia. Official Nektarios Farmakis said that around six villages were evacuated on the day before near Olympia, Greece.
Some firefighters are trying to control the fire in Evia, 200 km east of Athens. In Evia, a monastery get trap by fire. And 150 houses were damage.
The mayors of the towns stated that. The Wildfire is moving rapidly and it is also difficult to control the fire around Saint David monastery. The area near the monastery gets evacuate on Wednesday.
The worst situation on Thursday
Few on-duty firefighters reported that. The situation becomes worst yesterday as due to strong winds it was getting hard to control the Fire. it gets hard to reach the affected areas as there was less visibility and thick smoke.
They also reported that it is getting hard for the firefighters to deal with 92 forest fires in 24 hours in addition to 118 forest fires in the previous day.
The Deputy Minister of Greece said that. “ The hardest is still to come”. Turkey the neighbouring country of Greece is also suffering from the worst forest fire.
According to the expert, increasing global warming is one of the biggest reasons for the increase in the level and frequency of such fires.
