India Today Survey: PM Modi’s popularity dropped from 66% to 24% in one year.

Recently, India Today conducted a survey titled “Mood of the Nation.”  According to the survey by India Today, PM Modi’s popularity rating dropped from 66% to about 24% in less than one year.

One of the main reasons behind the fall was the mishandling of the Covid-19 crisis.

While PM Modi received appreciation and was lauded for his success in handling the first wave of Covid-19 with a 73% approval rating in January 2021. The crisis of the second wave brought popularity down to about 49%. Notably, this was a significant drop in popularity.

Around 27% of the people who participated in the survey think that large gatherings, including election rallies, were responsible for the devastating second wave.

Also, 71% of the participants believe that the actual number of Covid-19 induced deaths is far more than shown in the government database. However, about 44% of the participants feel that the health crisis was a failure of both the State and the Central Government.

According to the survey conducted by India Today, 29% of the people thought that rise in price and inflation was the biggest failure of the government. About 23% of people feel that the unemployment rate is the second big failure of the Central Government.

The survey monitored other political leaders for the position of the Prime Minister. Uttar Pradesh’s CM Yogi Adityanath stood in the second position with an 11% popularity rating after PM Modi. The third on the list was Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi with a popularity rating of 10%.

Rahul Gandhi’s popularity has increased from 8% to 10% since 2020. CM Adityanath’s popularity rating has also increased from 3% from the 2019 survey.

But, CM Adityanath’s stood seventh in position in the list of 11 Chief Ministers. Notably, these Ministers were ranked based on their popularity in their home states.

The findings of the survey by India Today, gains importance as the Assembly Elections in UP are due next year.

For 2021, the survey was conducted between July 10 and July 22. The total number of participants was around 14,599. Of the total participants, 71% of the people represent rural areas and 29% of the people represent urban areas.

The survey covered residents of 19 states, 115 parliamentary and 230 Assembly seats of India.

The next Prime Ministerial Elections are due in 2024. Let us see who among the popular faces grabs the seat.
